Food suppliers under the Free SHS programme say government’s failure to pay about GH¢250 million owed them has left them struggling to repay bank loans.

Secretary of the Controlled Food Suppliers Association, Cornelius Koku Logo, said most supplies were financed with bank loans and produce taken on credit from farmers.

“These supplies were funded by bank loans… and from then till now we’ve not been able to pay for those loans,” he told Eyewitness News on Wednesday, October 7.

Mr Logo said the Association engaged the National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) and Ghana Commodity Exchange (GCX) in April, wrote to the Ministry of Education in July for intervention, and later approached the Ministry of Finance, but all follow-ups yielded no results.

The Association has now given government a two-week ultimatum to begin negotiations and provide a clear timeline for settling the debt, which covers food supplied during the 2024/2025 academic year.
