DAILY NEWSFLASH INVESTIGATION: DEFILEMENT FOR TRADE? – SHAI OSUDOKU

A 14-year-old JHS 2 pupil of Huapa DA Basic School in the Shai Osudoku District has accused her teacher, Bismark Amedorgbor, of defiling her on July 23, 2026, during the school’s “Our Day” celebration.

Police at Akuse have confirmed the arrest of the suspect on September 11, 2026. According to police, the teacher admitted to the act in his caution statement, however that admission is yet to be tested in court. The case is currently being handled by DOVVSU.

The Push For Home Settlement

While police investigations continue, there is a growing push from the family and some traditional leaders for a home settlement.

At a meeting held on September 25, led by the Chief of Huapa, Nene Atseku Obodai Torgbor II – who is also the victim’s uncle – it was proposed that GH¢5,000 be used for rituals to cleanse the royal stool and GH¢15,000 paid as compensation to the family.

Complainant Michael Obodai has indicated that they will withdraw the case from the police if the money is paid within 3 weeks.

Family Divided

The family appears divided on the matter. The victim’s grandmother, Joyce Kwettey, says she is pained but prefers settlement. The victim herself says she does not want prosecution because the teacher had supported her schooling.

Other family members, however, are insisting on full court justice.

Other Allegations Uncovered During Investigation:

– Pupils allege alcohol including Rush, Don Simon, Club, 5Star and Origin was present during the “Our Day” celebration, with claims that the teacher supplied some.
– Classmates allege the victim became unwell and was taken to the teacher’s room on his instruction.
– Both the victim and her grandmother allege the teacher brought Postinor-2 the following day.
– Classmates further allege they have been washing and cooking for the teacher since Class 5.

Official Position

A medical report from the Ashaiman Municipal Hospital confirms loss of virginity but could not confirm when it occurred due to late examination.

The Ghana Education Service Code of Conduct prohibits all forms of sexual relations between teachers and pupils and also prohibits the use of pupils for private work.

DOVVSU insists that defilement under Act 29 is a serious crime punishable by 7 to 25 years imprisonment and cannot be settled at home. The unit says it will reject any attempt to withdraw the case.

The Huapa community is currently polarized between those calling for a traditional settlement and those demanding prosecution.
