ACCRA — The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and Pre-Tertiary Education Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG) have declared a nationwide strike effective today, Friday, September 25, 2026.

The three pre-tertiary teacher unions announced the industrial action over what they describe as unresolved concerns about their conditions of service.

Why The Teachers Are Striking

According to the unions, the strike is anchored on three main issues:

1. Stalled Collective Agreement: The unions say negotiations for a new Collective Agreement have stalled despite the expiration of the existing one. The agreement, which should have been completed on or before June 2026, remains un-negotiated.

“The existing Collective Agreement has expired. Unfortunately, the negotiation of the new one, which should have been completed on or before June 2026, has not been done. Thus, the new Collective Agreement stands un-negotiated, and we have raised this concern with the FWSC several times, but as of today, the issue is still outstanding!” the unions stated.

2. Salary Placement For Promoted Teachers: Teachers who passed aptitude tests in December 2025 and February 2026 have not been automatically placed on their appropriate salary scales as previously agreed.

3. Deprived Area Allowance: The unions also accused government of failing to implement the deprived area allowance provided for under Section 17(2) of the 2024 Collective Agreement.

The unions say the unresolved issues have created “widespread dissatisfaction, anger, and disillusionment” among teachers across the country.

They have therefore declared the strike “effective today Friday, 25th September 2026, to press home our demands.”

The industrial action is expected to affect teaching and learning in public pre-tertiary schools nationwide until the concerns are addressed.
