The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, has disclosed that he has engaged the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) and the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) to roll out a programme to provide live coverage of General Assembly and Town Hall meetings across Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).
In a post on Facebook on Tuesday, September 15, the Minister said the initiative is aimed at strengthening transparency, accountability and citizen participation in local governance, in line with the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936).
According to him, the live broadcasts will give citizens greater access to proceedings and discussions at the local level and deepen public understanding of the decentralisation system.
Hon. Ayariga added that the initiative is also expected to generate greater public interest and participation in the upcoming District-Level Elections, while encouraging more citizens to actively engage in the decentralisation process.
“Together, we can build more transparent, accountable and responsive local institutions,” he stated.
