Minority Leader in Parliament and Effutu MP, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has taken legal action against Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) Chief Executive Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, over statements he says are false and defamatory.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin announced the lawsuit on Monday, August 24, 2026, when Parliament reconvened, following weeks of public exchanges between the two over the operations of GoldBod and reported losses associated with the Bank of Ghana’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme (DGPP).

The dispute intensified after Mr. Gyamfi described the Minority Leader as an “extortionist” in response to Mr. Afenyo-Markin’s criticism and demands for accountability over the reported US$1.7 billion loss recorded by the Bank of Ghana in 2025 under the gold purchase programme.

According to Mr. Afenyo-Markin, he has instructed his lawyers to commence legal proceedings against Mr. Gyamfi as well as media organisations that published or broadcast the statements.

He cited Suit Number GT/1029/2026, titled _Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin versus Samuel Adu Gyamfi and Multimedia Group Limited_, filed at the Accra High Court.

He also referred to Suit Number GR/ACH/CC/C5/02/2026, titled _Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin versus Eric Adjei and Peace FM_, filed at the Achimota Circuit Court.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin expressed confidence that the courts would determine the matter based on evidence and applicable law.

“I have every confidence that in the fullness of time the court will make the appropriate determination,” he said.

The legal action comes amid a broader political and public debate over the financial performance of the DGPP and its relationship to the reported losses at the central bank.
