ACCRA, GHANA — The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on the Attorney-General to discontinue all criminal cases involving former appointees of the previous Akufo-Addo administration, following the Court of Appeal’s decision to acquit and discharge former MASLOC CEO, Sedinam Christine Tamakloe Attionu.

In a statement issued on Thursday, July 30, and signed by General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP described the appellate court’s decision as _“a travesty of justice”_ and alleged it reflected a politically motivated justice system.

*Background to the Case
Madam Tamakloe Attionu had been sentenced by the High Court in April 2024 to 10 years’ imprisonment after being found guilty of offenses including stealing, causing financial loss to the state, money laundering, and breaches of the Public Procurement Act.

According to the NPP, the trial court found that her actions between 2013 and 2016 caused a financial loss of nearly GH¢90 million to the state.

The party stated that she fled Ghana during the trial, was convicted _in absentia_, and was later extradited from the United States to Ghana on June 9, 2026.

The NPP said the High Court judgment was based on _“substantial evidence”_ including findings on fraudulent disbursements, unaccounted funds, and alleged diversion of MASLOC resources. It therefore questioned how the conviction could be overturned.

NPP’s Allegations
The party alleged that the acquittal fits a pattern it claims has emerged since January 2025, where cases involving individuals associated with the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) have been discontinued or terminated.

_“This latest development undermines public confidence in the justice system and weakens efforts to protect the public purse,”_ the statement said.

NPP’s Demands
The NPP is demanding that the Attorney-General:
1. Immediately discontinue all criminal cases involving former appointees of the previous administration, if the same standards are to be applied.
2. Acquit and discharge its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as _Chairman Wontumi_, whose 20-year prison sentence the party says is politically motivated and is currently under appeal.
3. Publicly account for all criminal cases involving persons affiliated with the governing party that have been withdrawn, discontinued, or terminated since January 2025.

The party also urged the Judicial Council and leadership of the Judiciary to take steps to restore public confidence in the administration of justice.

The NPP said it will pursue all lawful legal avenues, including seeking a review of the Court of Appeal’s decision at the Supreme Court where applicable.

_“The fight against corruption must be impartial and not influenced by political considerations,”_ the statement concluded.
