ACCRA – Monday, July 20, 2026
The *New Patriotic Party (NPP) is demanding updates on petitions filed against some National Democratic Congress (NDC) officials over alleged illegal mining activities.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong asked the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to make public the status of investigations into NDC National Organiser Joseph Yamin and Third National Vice Chairman Abanga Yakubu.
He also referenced allegations involving Ahafo Ano South East MP Mohammed Yakubu, the DCE for the area, and Aowin MP Oscar Ofori Larbi.
“The fight against illegal mining cannot be credible only when it targets political opponents, while overlooking allegations involving others,” Mr. Frimpong stated.
The NPP insists that the fight against galamsey must be fair and non-partisan, and that all allegations must be investigated regardless of political affiliation.
The remarks came hours after the Accra High Court sentenced NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, aka Chairman Wontumi, to 20 years in prison over offenses linked to illegal mining in the Samreboi case.
The NPP also called on the government to intensify action against illegal mining, flooding, and security challenges, saying Ghanaians expect consistent law enforcement and competent leadership.
As of press time, the NDC and the officials named had not responded to the allegations.
