The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, has announced that the government will undertake a complete reconstruction of the Eastern Corridor Road, converting it into an asphalt pavement rather than performing patch repairs on the existing surface-dressed road. He indicated that the corridor has surpassed its design life and necessitates a more durable solution.

During an inspection of the 46-kilometre rehabilitation of the Dodo Pepesu–Nkwanta–Dambai Road, which is being executed by Growth 82 Global Limited, the Minister stated that technical assessments have revealed that the road has exceeded its design life after more than a decade without significant maintenance.

He elaborated that, instead of implementing patchwork repairs or retaining the existing road base, the government has opted for a comprehensive reconstruction of the corridor, which includes the replacement of the road base where necessary, to establish a more resilient and long-lasting road network.

The Minister emphasized that this decision aims to enhance safety, improve connectivity along the Eastern Corridor, and mitigate the high maintenance costs associated with frequent spot repairs.

“We are modifying the road base and applying a prime coat prior to laying the final asphalt surface. This approach does not involve repairing the existing surface dressing. We do not have sufficient time, and the contractor must expedite the work significantly.”
