The Ghana National Association of Teachers has reportedly demanded a police enquiry bail for the teacher of Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School who was arrested following a viral video showing an alleged assault on a female student.
According to GNAT, its preliminary investigations indicate that the incident began when the student allegedly threw stones, resulting in a confrontation between the student and the teacher. The association argues that the teacher reacted in self-defense and in an attempt to maintain discipline and control within the school environment.
GNAT further claims that its representatives visited the police station and requested an enquiry bail for the teacher while investigations continue. However, they allege that the request was denied, with officers reportedly informing them that the decision was based on “orders from above.”
The teacher union has warned that it could take drastic action, including a boycott of the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination, if the teacher is not granted bail pending investigations.
The development has sparked debate among the public, with some supporting the union’s call for due process. In contrast, others insist that the law should be allowed to take its course as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Authorities have yet to officially respond to the claims made by GNAT.
