The Finance Minister, Ato Forson, has declared that renewals of mining leases will no longer be granted automatically. Mining companies will now be obligated to thoroughly develop their concessions and demonstrate genuine investment and productivity before any renewal is approved.
This decision represents a significant and strategic advancement in Ghana’s resource governance.
It is imperative that Ghana assumes full control over its natural resources, ensuring that mining activities are conducted in the national interest, rather than solely for foreign extraction and profit. Each concession must contribute tangible development, employment opportunities, and value to the nation before it is extended.
Ghana’s resources should primarily benefit its citizens. There will be no more passive renewals or empty promises; only performance, accountability, and authentic development will be considered.
