A Development and Management Practitioner, Mr. Confidence E. Abotsi, has proposed a blueprint for operationalising Ghana’s 24-hour economy through Local Economic Development (LED), entrepreneurship and resource-based industrialisation.
In an exclusive interview with Dela Radio News, Mr. Abotsi, who is also a member of the NDC’s Employment and Job Creation Manifesto Committee, said the success of the 24-hour economy depends on translating national policies into productive activities at the local level by developing local resources and building value-added industries.
He noted that although national unemployment declined from 14.7% in 2023 to 13.0%, youth unemployment remains high at 21.9% among persons aged 15 to 35, describing the situation as a crisis compounded by underemployment and unstable, low-paying jobs.
Mr. Abotsi said Ghana must move beyond job-seeking to enterprise development and production within local economies, citing Central Tongu and the wider Tongu enclave as having huge potential in water resources, clay deposits, arable land and tourism that can drive value chains in agriculture, agro-processing, fisheries, manufacturing and tourism.
He argued that anchoring the 24-hour economy on local resources and industries will create sustainable jobs, boost local production and accelerate national economic transformation.
