FIASO – Disaster was averted at Fiaso on the Techiman-Nkoranza Highway after a bulk tanker carrying approximately 4,000 kilogrammes of gas crashed and started leaking.
The incident occurred on Thursday, August 27, 2026, and was reported to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) at about 9:35 a.m.
Swiftly responding to the distress call, the Fire Service deployed personnel from the Techiman and Nkoranza fire stations to the scene to prevent the situation from escalating into a major tragedy.
The base pump, DPT FS 547, stationed at Techiman, was dispatched with a six-member crew. The vehicle was driven by Sub-Officer Kusi Collins, while Assistant Station Officer Awal Mohammed led the operation.
A second fire appliance, DPT FS 509 from Nkoranza, also arrived at the scene with another six-member crew to support the emergency operation.
The firefighters arrived at approximately 10:23 a.m. and immediately assessed the tanker and the surrounding area to determine the extent of danger.
As a precautionary measure, vehicular movement on the busy highway was temporarily halted to minimise the risk of ignition and to protect motorists and other road users.
The fire crews subsequently applied foam concentrate to tactically control the situation and successfully stopped the leakage from the tanker.
The Municipal Chief Executive for Nkoranza South, Hon. Godfred Dapaa, was also present at the scene to monitor the emergency response.
Thanks to the coordinated and professional intervention by the GNFS, the situation was brought under control, averting what could have been a devastating explosion.
Fortunately, no casualties were recorded in the accident.
The Ghana National Fire Service has urged motorists and the public to exercise extreme caution around accident scenes involving gas or other hazardous materials and to allow emergency responders to carry out their duties without obstruction.
