ASAMAN TAMFOE, EASTERN REGION – Tragedy has struck Asaman Tamfoe in the Atewa East District of the Eastern Region after a mining pit collapsed, trapping 11 illegal miners underground.
The incident occurred at about 11 p.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2026, while the miners were working inside the pit in search of gold.
According to reports, two miners who were outside the pit at the time it caved in rushed to the community to raise an alarm and seek help. Residents quickly mobilized a rescue team and alerted the police and other emergency agencies.
Rescue teams worked through the night and have so far retrieved the remains of seven miners. Five of the deceased have been identified as residents of Moseaso, while the remaining two are said to be from Asaman Tamfoe.
Four other miners are still feared trapped underground as rescue efforts continue.
Personnel from the Anyinam District Police Command, the Ghana National Ambulance Service, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and community volunteers are currently at the scene assisting with the search and rescue operation.
The cause of the collapse is yet to be determined. Authorities are expected to provide further updates as rescue efforts continue.
