The Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that government will construct 50,000 housing units for teachers across the country.
The project, dubbed the “Teacher Dabre Initiative”, is aimed at providing quality and affordable accommodation for teachers and motivating more educators to accept postings to rural communities.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series, the Minister said the initiative forms part of broader efforts to improve teacher welfare nationwide.
He also revealed that the government is in the final stages of introducing a 20% rural allowance for teachers who serve in underserved and deprived areas.
“These interventions are designed to make rural teaching more attractive, improve retention, and ensure every Ghanaian child has access to quality education,” Mr. Iddrisu stated.
He noted that enhancing the living conditions of teachers is key to strengthening the education sector and achieving Ghana’s long-term development goals.
