ACCRA – Monday, July 20, 2026
Pupils from Kindergarten to Junior High School in Ghana will soon start learning Coding, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Electronics as part of a revised basic school curriculum.

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, announced this at a press briefing in Accra on Monday. He said the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) has developed the new curriculum under what it calls a “Smart Start Curriculum.”

According to the Minister, the new subjects are being added alongside Civic Ethics to strengthen the teaching of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) at the basic level.

“We have promised to introduce coding, electronics, artificial intelligence and pivot into the basic education curriculum,”Mr. Iddrisu stated.

He explained that the revised curriculum will also place greater emphasis on ethical values, civic responsibility, and the responsible use of public resources.

The document will first be presented to the Ministry of Education by NaCCA, before it goes to President John Dramani Mahama, Cabinet and Parliament for approval.

The Minister said the review forms part of government’s plan to invest more in basic education, which he noted has received less attention compared to secondary education over the years.

Mr. Iddrisu did not, however, state when the curriculum will take effect or how teachers will be trained to deliver the new technical subjects.

The Ministry is yet to publish the full curriculum document or an implementation roadmap.
