President Mahama, on his Volta Region Tour at Perki College of Education, has announced plans to recruit 16,000 newly trained teachers nationwide as part of the government’s strategy to reduce unemployment and improve the delivery of education.
The recruitment will target graduates from Colleges of Education who have completed their training and are awaiting posting.
Speaking at a national address, the President said the initiative is critical to both job creation and strengthening basic education in underserved communities.
“We recognize the frustration of our young graduates who complete training and wait for opportunities. Today, I am proud to announce that the government will immediately begin recruiting 16,000 newly trained teachers. This is about giving jobs to our youth and giving quality education to our children, the President stated.
He added that the new teachers will help reduce class sizes, improve learning outcomes, and ensure that every child, regardless of location, has access to a qualified teacher.
The Minister of Education, in a statement, confirmed that the Ministry has been directed to begin the recruitment process this quarter.
“The 16,000 teachers will be posted to basic schools with the greatest need, especially in rural and deprived areas. We are also working to clear the backlog to ensure no trained teacher is left behind,”* the Minister said.
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and other stakeholders have welcomed the announcement, describing it as a “timely and necessary intervention” to address both unemployment and teacher shortages.
The Ministry of Education says orientation and deployment processes will begin in the coming weeks.
