Volta Region – July 17, 2025
President John Dramani Mahama has made a direct appeal to former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta to return to Ghana as government pushes ahead with legal steps to secure his extradition.
Speaking during the _Reset Tour and Citizens’ Engagement_ in the Volta Region on Friday, President Mahama reminded Mr. Ofori-Atta of words he once used to defend his stay in office.
“You held the most sensitive position as finance minister,” the President said.
“And at a time when 80 of your own MPs signed to have you removed, you said something historic. You said you are like a father to children and that you cannot run away and abandon your children.”
He continued:
“So if we Ghanaians are your children, we are calling you, we are begging you — father, come back. Your children are calling you to come back.”
“If You Have Done Nothing Wrong, Come Home”
President Mahama questioned why anyone who insists on their innocence would choose to stay outside the country instead of facing the process at home.
“If you are a man of principle and you believe you have done nothing wrong, I don’t see why you should flee your own country,” he said.
Extradition Process Underway
The President clarified that the return of Mr. Ofori-Atta must follow due legal process because it involves another country.
“Extradition is a legal process, and so you need to respect the rights of the person at the same time,” he noted.
According to him, the *Attorney General’s Department* has already filed the necessary application and is submitting additional documents requested by authorities abroad.
“The Attorney General’s Department has done its best. The application has been filed. Some additional documents were asked for and those are being filed. Eventually it will go before an American judge to make a decision,” President Mahama stated.
Mr. Ofori-Atta, who served as Finance Minister for 7 years, is currently outside Ghana. Authorities have begun processes to bring him back through extradition.
