In a briefing to the legislature regarding the flood situation in Accra and other regions of the country, the Interior Minister reported that seven additional individuals are missing following the floods that have adversely affected lives, property, and economic activities across 18 metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies (MMDAs) in Accra.
The impacted assemblies include Ga East (Abokobi area); Ledzokuku (Teshie); Ayawaso Central (Kokomlemle areas); Ga Central (Sowutuom); Ga West (Amasaman); Ablekuma North (Kwashieman, Odorkor, Awoshie, Sakaman, Nyamekye areas); Ningo-Prampram; Weija/Gbawe; and Ga South (including Ngleshie Amanfro, Bortianor, Kokrobite, Tuba, and Oshiyie).
Additional affected areas comprise Adentan; Korle Klottey (Adabraka, Circle, Osu, etc.); Okaikwei South (including Kaneshie, Awudome, Bubuashie, Avenor); Okaikwei North (including Achimota, Abeka, Tesano, Akweteman, Nii Boiman, Abofu, Apenkwa, etc.); Tema West (including Sakumono, Baatsonaa, Lashibi, Klagon, Adjei-Kojo, Halcrow, Dzata-Bu, Kassadjan, Railways, Kaiser, etc.); Tema Metropolitan; La Dadekotopon (La); and Krowor (Nungua) assemblies.
Mr. Mohammed-Mubarak expressed his condolences to those affected by the flash floods. “I would like to take this opportunity to extend our condolences, on behalf of the government and the people of Ghana, to the families who have lost their loved ones. We assure them that we stand with them during this difficult time,” he stated.
The minister noted that the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMeT) had alerted the Interior Ministry to anticipate further rainfall in June and July. He indicated that the floods on Monday were only brought to the ministry’s attention around midnight prior to the occurrence. Although the agency had predicted potential heavy rainfall, they were unable to provide precise estimates regarding the volume of water expected.
“However, Mr. Speaker, by morning, we observed a volume of rainfall that ranks as the fourth highest recorded in this country since 1995, amounting to 169 millimeters in a single day. The extensive flooding in Accra hindered access to the central business areas, as nearly all peripheral regions were affected,” Mr. Mohammed-Mubarak remarked.
He further elaborated that GMeT’s statistics indicated that significant rainfall is typically expected in June. “On that particular day, we experienced 169.2 millimeters of rain, marking the fourth largest volume recorded in a single day since 1995. For the month of June, the total rainfall reached 593.2 millimeters, the highest ever recorded in our nation’s history for a single month, surpassing the previous record of 420.6 millimeters in 2002,” the Interior Minister stated.
Regarding the number of individuals displaced across various municipalities, the Interior Minister reported that 2,000 individuals from 400 households were displaced in Ga East, with six individuals missing and five fatalities. In Ledzokuku, 1,200 individuals were displaced from 240 households, resulting in one death. In Ayawaso Central, 3,021 individuals from 605 households were displaced, with three fatalities and one individual missing.
In Ga Central, Mr. Mohammed-Mubarak indicated that 1,811 individuals were displaced from 363 households, with no reported missing persons or fatalities. In Ga West, 2,300 individuals from 460 households were displaced. In Ablekuma North, 651 individuals were displaced, affecting 131 households, with no missing or deceased persons recorded. In Ningo-Prampram, 1,377 individuals were displaced, impacting 276 households.
For Weija-Gbawe, the minister reported that 2,500 individuals were displaced, affecting 500 households, while in Ga South, 2,100 individuals were displaced, impacting 420 households. In Adentan, 1,850 individuals were displaced, affecting 270 households, and in Korle Klottey, 6,500 individuals were displaced from 1,300 households.
In Okaikwei South, 701 individuals were displaced from 141 households, while Okaikwei North saw 2,620 individuals displaced from 524 households. In Tema West, 690 households were affected, displacing 3,450 individuals, and in the Tema Metropolis, 721 households were displaced, affecting 3,601 individuals. In Tema West, three fatalities were reported.
La Dadekotopon experienced 404 affected households, displacing 2,020 individuals. In Krowor municipality, 220 households were affected by the floods, displacing 1,100 individuals, with no reported fatalities.
Central Region
Concerning the flood situation in the Central Region, Mr. Mohammed-Mubarak stated that information received over the past two weeks indicated that 58 houses had collapsed. In the Cape Coast Metropolis, 20 houses were reported as collapsed, while Gomoa East and Gomoa West experienced the loss of two and one house, respectively. In Agona East, seven houses were lost, with one house each lost in Gomoa Central and Twifo Hemang West, alongside six houses collapsing in Twifo Hemang Lower Denkyira and five houses in Mfantsiman. Additionally, one house was lost in Assin South and seven houses in Assin North, while two houses collapsed in Efutu.
In Cape Coast, five individuals lost their lives due to building collapses, with one person drowning. In Gomoa Central, one death was attributed to building collapse and another to drowning. In Mfantsiman, two fatalities were due to building collapse, with one drowning incident reported.
In the Volta Region, Mr. Mohammed-Muntaka noted that information indicated that 60 communities were affected. “I must acknowledge that, based on the information we have, there were no life-threatening situations reported in the Volta Region,” he stated.
He identified the affected districts in the region as Keta, where seven communities were impacted, and Anlo, where six communities were affected. Ketu South and Ketu North (Dzodze) each had six communities affected, while South Tongu (Sogakope) experienced eight affected communities. Akatsi had nine communities impacted, Adaklu had two, Central Tongu (Adidome) had three, North Tongu (Battor) had two, and Ho municipality had eight communities affected.
Western North
In the Western North region, the Interior Minister reported that over 1,200 individuals were displaced in Samreboi and its surrounding areas.
