The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), led by its Director-General, Major General Paul Seidu Tanye-Kulono, on Thursday, June 18, 2026, held an interactive stakeholder engagement on the proposed Keta Port Project at the Lagoon Beach Hotel in Keta.
The engagement formed part of a three-day visit by the GPHA delegation to the Volta Region to update stakeholders on progress made towards the realization of the much-anticipated Keta Port Project.
Prior to the stakeholder engagement, the Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, together with the Director-General of GPHA and his delegation, paid a courtesy call on the Awomefia of the Anlo State, Togbe Sri III, at his palace. During the visit, Major General Tanye-Kulono formally presented the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Permit Attainment Certificate to the revered traditional ruler, signifying that all environmental requirements for the commencement of the project had been met.
The delegation subsequently proceeded to the Lagoon Beach Hotel where chiefs, queen mothers, opinion leaders, heads of institutions, civil society organizations, assembly members, youth groups and residents gathered for a stakeholder briefing and interactive question-and-answer session.
Among the dignitaries present were the Member of Parliament for Anlo Constituency, Hon. Richard Kwame Sefe, the District Chief Executive for Anloga, Hon. Sandra Seyram Kpedor, the Municipal Chief Executive for Keta, Hon. Wisdom Bondieu Seade, and the Municipal Chief Executive for Ketu South, Hon. Nicholas Kwabla Worclachie. Also in attendance were traditional authorities, opinion leaders, heads of institutions, civil society organizations, assembly members, youth groups and indigenous residents from across the Anlo enclave.
Addressing participants, Hon. James Gunu reiterated President John Dramani Mahama’s government’s commitment to fulfilling its development agenda for the Volta Region. He highlighted key interventions currently underway, including the big push programme, the Blekusu Sea Defence Project, the implementation of the 24-Hour Economic Market programme, and the rollout of the Free Primary Healthcare Programme.
The Regional Minister noted that while several flagship projects were progressing across the region, the Keta Port Project remained one of the most transformative initiatives due to its potential to create jobs, boost trade and accelerate economic growth in the Volta Region.
Providing an update on the project, Major General Tanye-Kulono disclosed that GPHA had successfully secured the Environmental Protection Authority permit following extensive environmental impact assessments and stakeholder consultations. He further announced that forty-two companies had expressed interest in developing the port and that a rigorous evaluation process would be undertaken over the next three months to identify the most suitable developer.
He also revealed that the variation required for the completion of the Keta Port Headquarters building had received approval from the Central Tender Committee and expressed optimism that the facility would be completed by January 2027.
The Director-General encouraged young people in the region to acquire skills in maritime, logistics and port-related fields to position themselves for the employment opportunities that would emerge from the project. He explained that the proposed port is expected to serve not only the Volta Region but also Ghana’s northern corridor and neighbouring countries, thereby enhancing trade and economic activity.
The engagement featured an extensive interactive session during which participants raised questions and sought clarification on timelines, employment opportunities, environmental concerns, compensation issues and the overall implementation strategy for the project. Officials from GPHA responded to the concerns and assured stakeholders that the project would be executed transparently and in close consultation with the people.
Both Hon. James Gunu and Major General Tanye-Kulono called on all stakeholders to support the initiative, stressing that the Keta Port Project would serve as a catalyst for economic transformation in the Volta Region and Ghana as a whole.
The presentation of the EIA Permit Attainment Certificate marked a significant milestone and signified the official commencement of the next phase of activities towards the development of the Keta Port Project.
