During his practical attachment at Akuse Local Prison in 2017, Corporal Emmanuel Agyemfra Boateng of the Ashanti Regional Prisons Public Relations Team recounted an incident involving a senior high school (SHS) teacher who was remanded into custody. The teacher, accused of having a sexual relationship with a female SHS student, was deeply distressed and refused to eat for three days. He claimed that the student appeared older than her actual age and had other relationships, yet her parents pursued legal action, resulting in his detention.
In light of a recent video allegedly involving a teacher from Bole Senior High School and a student, Agyemfra Boateng has issued a cautionary message to teachers, urging them to uphold professional standards and avoid inappropriate relationships with students. His remarks follow the Ghana Education Service’s (GES) decision to interdict the teacher pending an investigation.
Through a Facebook post, Agyemfra Boateng highlighted the importance of professionalism and restraint for teachers, despite the temptations they may face. He also revealed that many professionals are imprisoned or facing trial for similar offenses involving students and minors.
These comments contribute to the ongoing public discourse on teacher-student relationships and professional ethics within Ghana’s educational system. Education stakeholders continue to stress the need for teachers to maintain appropriate boundaries, given their positions of trust and authority, which demand the highest standards of conduct.
