A collaborative team comprising military and police personnel conducted a raid on the ongoing China Mall project site in Koforidua, following the defiance of a stop-work order issued by the Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, due to concerns about flooding. During this operation, several workers, including Chinese nationals, were apprehended.

The Chinese investors associated with the China Mall project have recommenced construction activities despite the minister’s directive to cease work. This directive was issued in response to recent flooding issues linked to the project site.

According to information gathered by Eastern TV sources, the Chinese investors and their Ghanaian partners sought the intervention of Daasebre Kwaku Boateng III, the Omanhene of the New Juaben Traditional Area, requesting his assistance in persuading the Eastern Regional Minister to permit the continuation of work. At the same time, corrective drainage measures are being implemented concurrently. This request is based on the severe consequences that would arise from the suspension of construction activities.

They provided the following justifications:

i. The project is subject to contractual time constraints, and delays are resulting in penalties.

ii. Construction materials already delivered to the site are deteriorating, leading to financial losses.

iii. Workers engaged in the project, many of whom are expatriates, continue to receive daily wages despite the cessation of productive work.

iv. Other operational and logistical expenses continue to accumulate, placing the investment under significant strain.

Recently, the Regional Minister and the New Juaben South Municipal Chief Executive were summoned by the Omanhene for a private meeting. According to sources, the Omanhene ordered that the Chinese investors be permitted to resume work on the project.
