A court has convicted Desmond Bosomtwe for assaulting nurse Priscilla Addo at the Tema Community 22 Polyclinic, bringing an end to a case that attracted significant public attention and renewed discussions about the safety of healthcare workers.

In delivering its judgment, the court found Bosomtwe guilty of the assault. However, it took into consideration that he was a first-time offender and also considered his plea in mitigation before determining an appropriate sentence.

The court subsequently sentenced him to a fine of 100 penalty units or, in default, 12 months imprisonment. In addition, Bosomtwe was ordered to enter into a 12-month bond of good behaviour. Failure to comply with this order would result in an additional six-month prison term.

As part of the ruling, the court imposed a restriction barring Bosomtwe from visiting any patient at the Tema Community 22 Polyclinic for the next 12 months.

Furthermore, the court awarded compensation of GH¢5,000 to the complainant, nurse Priscilla Addo, for the assault. Bosomtwe has been directed to pay the amount as ordered by the court.

The case sparked widespread concern among healthcare professionals and members of the public, with many calling for stronger measures to protect medical staff from attacks while carrying out their duties.

The court’s decision is expected to serve as a deterrent to acts of violence against healthcare workers and reinforce the need for respect and protection of frontline medical personnel
