The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced his intention to propose a policy alternative aimed at addressing the ongoing challenges within Ghana’s cocoa sector. This announcement follows the government’s decision on February 12 to reduce the cocoa producer price to GH¢41,392 per tonne, equivalent to GH¢2,587 per bag, for the remainder of the 2025/2026 crop season. This decision has raised concerns among stakeholders in the sector.

In response to these developments, a Minority Caucus Select Committee was established to visit cocoa-growing regions and engage with farmers directly. The committee, led by Minority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh, compiled findings and recommendations based on feedback from cocoa farmers.

During a presentation, Dr. Bawumia stated that the report would be submitted to the party’s Policy Committee on Agriculture, Food Security, and Agribusiness for technical review and further consultation with experts. He explained that the committee would be tasked with assessing the findings and developing costed policy alternatives to address the concerns raised.

Dr. Bawumia remarked, “What I am contemplating with the presentation of this report is to submit this Select Committee report to the Policy Committee on Agriculture, Food Security, and Agribusiness. We intend to ask this committee to conduct a technical review of the findings, consult experts in the field, and subsequently propose costed policy alternatives.”

The anticipated policy alternative is expected to contribute to broader discussions on stabilizing Ghana’s cocoa industry and improving conditions for producers.
