AKATSI, Volta Region — Traders at Akatsi Central Market are urgently appealing to relevant authorities for intervention to address the deteriorating condition of market shades, which currently leave them vulnerable to adverse weather conditions.

A recent visit to the market highlighted the poor state of several shades, with heavy rainfall causing vendors and customers to seek urgent shelter. This situation has raised significant concerns regarding the welfare of the market women who conduct their business under these deteriorating structures.

A concerned observer remarked during the downpour, “My heart goes out to the market women who have placed their wares under these dilapidated shades. The rainfall underscored the urgent need for adequate shelter.”

In response to this situation, a call has been made to authorities and stakeholders to take decisive action towards re-roofing the shades. Those urged to act include Right Honorable Bernard Ahiafor, Member of Parliament for Akatsi South; Honorable James Gunu, Volta Regional Minister; and Honorable Daniel Dagba, Municipal Chief Executive of Akatsi South Municipal Assembly.

This appeal comes as traders anticipate the construction of a 24-hour economy market, promised by President John Dramani Mahama, which they hope will offer modern facilities and lasting relief.

The market women have expressed that immediate repairs to the existing shades would provide temporary relief and safeguard their goods and livelihoods until the new market project is realized.
