The Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu has stated that the shift system in public schools is not a national policy and has largely been phased out across the country. Responding to questions on the floor of Parliament, he explained that the system was introduced as a temporary measure to address overcrowding and inadequate infrastructure in some schools .He noted that the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) continue to construct additional classrooms at the basic level to fully eliminate the shift system.
The Minister also disclosed that government continues to prioritize the provision of adequate school furniture, with GH¢230 million allocated in the 2025 GET Fund distribution formula for furniture procurement for basic and Senior High Schools nationwide. He further highlighted the importance of the Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE) policy introduced in 1996, which seeks to provide every Ghanaian child with access to free, compulsory and quality basic education while reducing illiteracy and promoting equity in learning.
He also addressed concerns raised by the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), stating that the Ministry, through the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), has taken the necessary steps to maintain industrial harmony in the tertiary education sector.
