A heartbreaking tragedy has struck the people of Nkawkaw after a four-year-old boy reportedly lost his life in an uncovered culvert, sparking anger and condemnation from residents and the bereaved family against the Kwahu West Municipal Assembly.
According to reports, the young boy accidentally fell into the open drainage system during a heavy downpour and was swept away by the rushing water. Residents and family members launched a desperate search before his lifeless body was later retrieved.
The grieving family has accused the Assembly of negligence, claiming the uncovered culvert had remained dangerous for a long time despite several complaints from community members. They say authorities failed to act to prevent such a disaster, even though the drain posed a serious threat to children and pedestrians in the area.
The child’s mother, overwhelmed with sorrow, reportedly questioned why officials allowed the uncovered drain to remain unattended for so long. Some angry residents also joined the family in criticizing the Assembly, insisting that poor drainage systems and abandoned construction projects continue to endanger lives in Nkawkaw.
Reports indicate that the family was allegedly offered GH¢500 following the tragic incident, a gesture that has further sparked outrage among some residents who believe the response does not address the gravity of the loss.
The incident has reignited concerns over public safety, drainage maintenance, and accountability in many communities across Ghana, especially during the rainy season when floods become deadly.
Residents are now calling on the Kwahu West Municipal Assembly and relevant authorities to immediately cover exposed drains and repair dangerous culverts to prevent future tragedies.
