The Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee [PAC] has expressed concern over the payment of sub-minimum wages to casual workers at Anlo Afiadenyigba Senior High School in the Volta Region.

According to the chairman, the school was paying security personnel and other casual staff GH¢250 a month. Following concerns raised by auditors, the school increased the amount to GH¢450 a month. Both figures remain below Ghana’s national daily minimum wage for 2026.

Ghana’s National Tripartite Committee set the 2026 national daily minimum wage at GH¢21.77, equivalent to GH¢587.80 per month based on a 27-day work month. The rate took effect on 1st January 2026, and all employers are required to comply under the Labour Act, 2003.

The chairman questioned how workers could support their families on such incomes, highlighting the gap between the payments and the legal minimum.

Labour authorities have previously stated that failure to meet the national minimum wage is subject to sanctions under the law. The PAC is expected to pursue the matter further as part of its oversight of public institutions.
