The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has shut down several mattress manufacturing companies at Afienya near Tema for using substandard materials in production.
The affected firms include Yin Yuan Jia Limited, Mooda Limited, Hue Sheng Company, producers of Kalusini mattresses, and Asano Service.
According to the GSA, the companies were using polystyrene instead of approved polyurethane in making mattresses.
Polystyrene is commonly used for packaging electronic appliances and household items.
Speaking during the operation on Monday, May 18, Greater Accra Regional Manager Clement Kubati said the chemicals used failed GSA quality tests and were not approved.
“These chemicals are unapproved and can affect both human health and the environment,” he said.
The authority says the exercise forms part of efforts to protect consumers and enforce production standards.
