The Second Vice President of the Pan-African Parliament, Zanetor Rawlings, has described the recent xenophobic attacks in South Africa as “very unfortunate” and says the continent’s leaders have a responsibility to remind younger generations of the history that binds Africa together.

Speaking to the press, Rawlings emphasized that Ghana and many other African nations played active roles in the liberation struggle of South Africa, something she believes is not being told well enough to today’s youth.

“Perhaps we are not telling the story enough to the younger generations,” she said.

“They need to be reminded about the sacrifices that were made, financial support, education, citizenship, asylum, passports, and logistics that were provided to people who then subsequently became part of the liberation struggle.”

Rawlings Zanetor noted that the Pan-African Parliament intends to formally raise the issue of xenophobic attacks as part of its calendar, ensuring that the principles of unity and solidarity across the continent are not forgotten.

“Indeed, the issue of the xenophobic attacks in South Africa is very unfortunate, and we have raised it,” she stated.

“We have a duty, as members of the Pan-African Parliament, to remind the generation that may have forgotten the important principles that bind us together as people of this continent.”
