Speaking on Wednesday, Tshisekedi said he has not officially asked for a third term, but would accept it if the people of DR Congo support the idea through a referendum.
“I have not asked for a third term, but I’m telling you — if the people want me to have a third term, I will accept,” he stated.
Under the country’s constitution, a president is only allowed to serve a maximum of two terms. However, Tshisekedi suggested that the will of the people could determine whether changes are made.
The Congolese leader also hinted that future elections may not be held on schedule due to the ongoing confl|ct in the eastern part of the country.
The region has faced growing insecurity after M23 rebels seized large parts of North and South Kivu, including the major cities of Goma and Bukavu.
