A student of UMAT has reportedly taken his own life after struggling with a GH¢16,500 debt, following an alleged scam involving a phone dealer abroad.
According to reports, he had sent money to an individual overseas to purchase mobile phones, with the agreement that the items would be brought to Ghana for resale. However, the person allegedly misused the funds and failed to deliver the phones.
In an attempt to repay the debt, the student explored various options, including reportedly taking money from someone close to him to place bets on a betting platform. Unfortunately, he lost the money, worsening his financial situation and increasing the pressure on him.
Despite his parents becoming aware of the situation, they were unable to provide the needed support. The growing burden of the debt is said to have taken a severe emotional toll on him. Tragically, he eventually left behind suicide notes before ending his life.
