Academic activities have fully resumed at the Juapong Methodist Basic School following the nationwide two-week strike by teacher unions.
A visit by Daily Newsflash to the school, which has one of the largest pupil populations in the area, showed that both teachers and learners have returned to the classroom.
Speaking to Daily Newsflash, the Headmistress, Madam Rejoice, said the industrial action had taken a toll on teaching and learning, with two weeks of instructional time lost.
To make up for the lost time, she disclosed that the school has put in place measures to cover the syllabus before the end of the 15-week academic term. According to her, teachers will now report to school earlier than the usual reporting time and close later than the normal closing hours to intensify teaching and learning.
She appealed to parents who are still keeping their children at home to release them to return to school, emphasizing that teaching has resumed in earnest.
For his part, Mr. Ernest Kranteng, a Basic 6 teacher, admitted that the strike had created a gap but assured that teachers are committed to working harder, including organizing extra classes for pupils.
He urged pupils to be punctual and come to school with their learning materials, and called on his colleague teachers to put in extra effort to recover the lost weeks.
It would be recalled that the strike was declared by teacher unions two weeks ago, shortly after schools resumed from vacation, over unresolved issues with government. The action was called off after several engagements, paving the way for teachers to return to post.
