The call by the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) for a nationwide audit of alleged inflated enrolment figures under the Ghana School Feeding Programme is gaining momentum in the Central Tongu District.

Sources within the District have alleged that some constituency executives, including a Women Organizer, are inflating enrolment figures in some basic schools to benefit from payments for non-existent pupils.

According to the sources, the alleged practice involves presenting ghost names as pupils under the programme.

The allegation comes at a time the District is facing scrutiny over academic performance, following a Ghana Education Service (GES) report indicating that over 2,500 students in 16 Senior High Schools in the Volta Region, including schools in Central Tongu, recorded zero percent tertiary qualification.

Stakeholders in the District are therefore calling on the Ghana School Feeding Secretariat and the Central Tongu District Assembly to as a matter of urgency audit enrolment figures in beneficiary schools in the District to establish the veracity or otherwise of the allegation.

They contend that payment for ghost pupils, if proven, not only causes financial loss to the state but also distorts education data and contributes to poor educational outcomes.

Efforts to get a response from the alleged persons and the District Secretariat of the School Feeding Programme were unsuccessful as at press time.
