The North Tongu District Assembly has hosted officials from the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition as part of a sensitisation and scoping exercise for the Government’s Solar Home Systems Distribution Programme.
The exercise, held on Thursday, August 20, 2026, is aimed at identifying communities and households not connected to the national electricity grid and assessing their eligibility for the programme. The initiative seeks to improve access to affordable and reliable electricity for underserved communities in the district.
Under the programme, eligible beneficiaries can access a subsidised Solar Home System at a cost of GH¢3,800. Each package comes with a television, radio, mobile phone charging facility and five lighting bulbs.
The scoping also covers unelectrified households, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), CHPS compounds, nurses’ quarters and teachers’ quarters. Additionally, free 3-kilowatt LED solar systems are being allocated for selected public facilities and street lighting to boost community development.
The District Assembly says it is working with Assembly Members, community leaders and other stakeholders to identify suitable locations and ensure the intervention reaches those most in need.
The Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to collaborate with the Ministry to ensure successful implementation of the programme and expand access to clean and sustainable energy to support education, healthcare, small businesses and community safety.
