Residents of Akrade, located in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region, have expressed grave concerns regarding a hazardous drainage system constructed by the Ghana Railway Authority as part of the Tema-Mpakadan railway project.
In an interview with Angel News in Akrade, Nana Acheampong, the Mrantehene of Akrade, stated that the drainage has become a perilous trap for community members during rainfall events.
He noted that the substantial volume of water flowing through the drainage has caused it to widen, resulting in significant land degradation as runoff erodes the surrounding terrain.
Nana Acheampong further asserted that the Railway Authority should have extended the drainage to connect with the main gutters, a modification he believes would have mitigated the issues faced by the community.
Consequently, Nana Acheampong has indicated his intention to pursue legal action against the Ghana Railway Authority, which he characterizes as having performed substandard work that jeopardizes the safety of residents in New Akrade and surrounding areas, unless they return to complete the drainage construction.
The Assembly Member for the Akrade Electoral Area, Prince Christopher Kwabena Sey, has also called upon the Asuogyaman District Assembly to take immediate action and reinstate the contractors to finalize the drainage works, thereby safeguarding lives and property in the region.
Residents report that the situation becomes increasingly dire during the rainy season, rendering movement hazardous for both children and adults in the vicinity.
