The pottery industry in Torgorme, a community situated within the North Tongu District, is currently experiencing considerable difficulties due to diminished patronage and restricted market opportunities. Despite the area’s rich cultural heritage and the artisans’ exceptional craftsmanship in pottery production, many artisans are facing challenges in sustaining their livelihoods.

During a visit by our news team to Torgorme, pottery artisan Sabah Margaret expressed her concerns regarding the declining demand for locally crafted pottery products. She identified the principal challenge confronting the industry as the absence of a reliable and substantial market to absorb the products produced by local potters.

She elaborated that, although artisans dedicate considerable time, effort, and resources to producing high-quality pottery items, sales remain disappointingly low. Consequently, many pottery producers are unable to recoup their production costs, resulting in significant financial losses each year.

Sabah Margaret further emphasized the systemic inefficiencies within the sector that impede its growth. She noted that these challenges have led individual pottery businesses to incur losses amounting to thousands of cedis annually, making it increasingly difficult for artisans to sustain their operations and preserve the craft for future generations.

The Torgorme Heritage Pot Industry is therefore appealing to government agencies, non-governmental organizations, private investors, and other stakeholders to support initiatives aimed at promoting and marketing local pottery products. Stakeholders believe that enhanced market access, exhibitions, tourism promotion, and strategic partnerships could help rejuvenate the industry and create sustainable economic opportunities for artisans within the community.

As one of the traditional crafts that embodies the cultural identity of the people of Torgorme, pottery remains a vital source of income and heritage preservation. Industry participants remain optimistic that, with the necessary support and investment, the sector can regain its vitality and contribute significantly to local economic development.
