The Volta Regional Minister, Honorable James Gunu, has convened a meeting with key stakeholders and residents in the South Tongu District to address ongoing water and electricity challenges impacting multiple communities.
This meeting included the presence of the South Tongu District Chief Executive, Victoria Dzeklo, as well as representatives from Ghana Water Limited, the Electricity Company of Ghana, and concerned citizens, all gathered to deliberate on practical solutions and ongoing government interventions.
During the engagement, the Minister emphasized government initiatives aimed at enhancing access to potable water, such as the provision of ten boreholes per district, the ongoing Agordome Water Project, and his “Water for All” initiative, which is designed to support communities experiencing water shortages.
Regarding electricity, he outlined measures being implemented through the Electricity Company of Ghana and GRIDCo to strengthen power supply in the Volta Region. These measures include plans for a new Bulk Supply Point in Ho and the upgrade of the Asiekpe-Ho transmission line from 69kV to 161kV to enhance power stability and reduce frequent outages.
Subsequent to the stakeholder engagement, the Minister conducted a tour of the Agordome Water Project site, where Project Manager Avi Ashkenazi disclosed that Phase One of the project is approximately 80% complete, with pipelines already extended to Anloga and Keta.
Upon completion, the project is expected to provide a reliable water supply to approximately 420,000 people across 65 communities, while Phase Two will extend coverage to Akatsi and the surrounding areas.
Additionally, the Minister visited the local offices of Ghana Water Limited and the Electricity Company of Ghana in Sogakope, where he encouraged staff to uphold professionalism and improve customer service while addressing concerns raised by customers.
“Government remains committed to collaborating with all stakeholders to address these challenges and enhance the living conditions of our people,” the Minister assured.
