Professor Joseph Atiah Akamah, an Interventional Cardiologist and Cardiovascular Epidemiologist, and a prominent member of Yaaba Medical Services, has highlighted an emerging issue concerning men suffering from hypertension who fail to adhere to their medication regimen due to the side effect of erectile dysfunction associated with certain antihypertensive drugs.
A significant number of these men express dissatisfaction with the impact of the medication on their sexual performance and consequently, neglect to take their prescribed medications consistently. The sexual dysfunction linked to hypertension or antihypertensive treatments can adversely affect patients’ adherence to therapy, potentially leading to a decline in their quality of life.
By opting not to take medication as prescribed due to concerns about erectile dysfunction, some men are effectively choosing to risk complications and even mortality over dealing with erectile dysfunction.
In light of this, Professor Joseph Atiah Akamah is advising men grappling with hypertension to avoid making decisions that compromise their health due to erectile dysfunction concerns. He emphasizes that such choices can result in severe complications and ultimately, death. He encourages men dealing with hypertension to seek advice from their physicians if these concerns arise, rather than disregarding their prescribed treatment.
Professor Akamah stated, “Men who are currently experiencing hypertension should continue taking their medication. Some men fear that antihypertensive medication will lead to impotence. Is it preferable to face impotence or suffer a stroke? Is it better to be impotent than to experience heart failure? If you have heart failure or a stroke, can you pursue romantic relationships? Can you even perform adequately in intimate settings? Therefore, monitor your blood pressure, take your medication, and inform your doctor if issues arise with sexual performance. They will address it, but neglecting your medication can lead to heart failure, kidney failure, and further complications.”
