On Friday, May 29, 2026, within the confines of Flagstaff House and just hours prior to his departure for the United Kingdom, President John Dramani Mahama reportedly engaged in a pivotal discussion with the most influential advisory body of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), decisively addressing a pressing issue.

There will be no third term.

The NDC Council of Elders, chaired by Alhaji Mahama Iddrisu and composed of veteran party members dating back to the PNDC era, had been urgently convened, not for celebration, but out of concern.

Premature succession campaigns were gaining traction within certain factions of the ruling party, prompting the elders to seek clarification directly from the President.

President Mahama provided them with unequivocal answers, reiterating a stance he had initially articulated publicly during a state visit to Singapore, and reaffirming it in one of the most confidential and influential settings in Ghanaian politics.
