The Techiman Circuit Court in the Bono East Region has on Monday sentenced Mariama Issah Sulemana, a 41- year old Staff of NADMO who is also a Caterer into four (4) months imprisonment for abusing and causing harm to her 12- year old step-daughter (name withheld) who is a JHS One Student of Nkwaeso Methodist School, a suburb of Techiman.

Mariam as she is affectionately called is a NADMO Zonal Coordinator who has been working as a Public Servant for about fifteen (15) years until her transfer from Takoradi in the Western Region to Techiman about two (2) years ago where she met a man whose wife is late with two (2) children and they got married.

Mariam also had children already, therefore until her jail was living with seven (7) children; two (2) step-children from her husband and others from her previous relationships as well as a little baby they had together.

Presenting the facts of the case to the Techiman Circuit Court; Police Prosecutor Inspector Ofori Yeboah revealed that Mariam was arrested on Saturday 24th May, 2026 after the Techiman Municipal Girls Education Officer Mrs. Ellen White Opoku heard about the plight of the little girl and lodged an official complaint with the Techiman Divisional DOVVSU.

The Mother of five (5) had shockingly inflicted serious wounds on the Victim’s palm, face and body with a car key under the reason that; she had been stealing her monies, frustrating her to take such an action.

The Police after initially arresting Mariam granted her an inquiry bail because she had a one-and-half baby with her.

After investigations into the matter, Mariam was arraigned before the Techiman Circuit Court where she pleaded guilty to the charge with explanations.

The Presiding Judge after listening to her; dismissed the explanations that her husband had travelled to Dubai for the past two (2) years to seek greener pastures without hearing from him and her 12-year old step-daughter picking up a habit of stealing her monies frustrated her to inflict the pain on the little girl’s body.

The Presiding Judge after dismissing her explanation convicted her on the first day in Court on Thursday 28th May but remanded her into Police Custody to reappear on Monday 1st June, 2026 for her punishment.

In his ruling, the Presiding Judge said he was sending Mariam away for some time to serve as a deterrent to others because he was convinced the Culprit had not regretted her actions.

He ordered that the two (2) step-children be taken away from Mariam and kept in the custody of their Father’s family and the five (5) other children (the oldest being 20 years and youngest being one and half months) be referred to the Family Tribunal to arrange with the families about how best to take care of them in the next four (4) months while their Mother will be serving her jail sentence in Prison.

Speaking in an interview with the Media on Monday after the court ruling, Nana Asantewaa Munufie the Techiman Municipal Guidance and Counseling Coordinator who doubles as the Queen Mother of Hansua and Banmuhemaa of Techiman Traditional Council strongly cautioned Parents and Guardians against maltreating children because the Ghana Education Service and Nananom shall see to it that anyone found culpable faces the law.

She added that the decisions or directives by the Techiman Circuit Court concerning the welfare of the Victim and the other children Mariam is leaving behind while going to spend four (4) months in prison was in order and very welcoming.
